However, for some, that wasn't the most rewarding aspect of the evening: Karen Brown, owner of Innocentia's Alexander Blue Bear, and her fiancé, Gordon Dotson, proudly watched as her British Shorthair baby, Alexander, received 14th Best Cat in Premiership in the Great Lakes Region! That's quite an accomplishment, so Innocentia Cattery wanted to sincerely congratulate Karen, Gordon and, of course, Alexander! There are ten spots in the finals, and Alex finaled in the top ten much of the show season to score enough points for a regional win. POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE (PKD) At Innocentia Cattery, we are happy to report that all of our British Shorthair cats have been genetically tested for Polycystic Kidney Disease. All of our cats are free of the PKD1 gene mutation. You can now be sure that any kitten you purchase from Innocentia is free from the PKD disease. What is Polycystic Kidney Disease? Polycystic Kidney Disease is an inherited kidney disease that was initially found in Persian cats around 1967. Actual study of this renal disease did not begin until 1990. This disease causes the kidneys to become enlarged, and cysts begin to develop. During World War II, the British Shorthair breed was nearly eliminated due to the bombing of England by the German airforce. In order to bring back the British Shorthair breed, some breeders used Persian cats to increase the limited gene pool. As a result, some of the Persian cats that were used had PKD, and thus the British Shorthair breed was also affected. Bruno "Rat-a-Tat" Cat, left, was placed on military R&R for burn out in our current Iraq military operations. To your right is Sgt. Bruno on R&R. Hmmm... Sgt. Bruno appears to be enjoying an ice cold bottle of Iraqi milk! A NEW HOME!!! This spring, our little ones began sleeping in their new home because Innocentia Cattery is now located in the small agricultural town of Carleton, Michigan! Carleton, Michigan is approximately 20 minutes south of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. This new location will be wonderful for clients that require their new babies shipped to them! BABY GIRL It is with great sadness that we must announce that we have lost a very special "personal pet." Star, who was Gary's "baby girl," passed away August 9th, 2006. She was 13 years old and played an important role in the Innocentia lineage. "Star" retired from her duties eight years ago, and lived as the Queen Bee in our home. We remember her most for her loving disposition, and her ability to tease Laura with her one token head bump, compared to Gary's many, many head bumps. She gave us so many years of happiness, and when she died, she did so in Gary's arms. We love and miss you, Star.
