The
British Shorthair cat is a very proper cat, British to the core! They are
generally well-mannered, unruffled, and reserved. A cat that thinks dignity
is extremely important. The Brit is a handsome cat with a broad, round face
and head, a muscular body, and a thick plush coat. |

The history of British Shorthair can be traced back to the time of the Roman
invasion of Britain, when the legionaries brought some cats from the back alleys
of Rome with them. These cats quickly settled into life in their new homeland,
becoming working cats, catching mice and other pests. They weathered the Medieval
years of suspicion and witchcraft. Eventually, Brits became popular as beloved
family house pets during the Victorian era. During the years of World War II,
when England was heavily bombed, British Shorthairs were almost lost. But enough
survived to keep the breed going.
Currently, British Shorthairs enjoy enormous popularity. The best-known color is
a deep dazzling blue. However, they are available in almost all cat colors and
patterns – tabbies and calicos, bicolor, tortes and solids. Blues and silvers are
popular, along with solid reds and creams and, of course, pure brilliant white
and sleek black.
